Commercial General Liability Insurance

General Liability

General Liability insurance is intended to provide coverage for liability arising out of nonprofessional acts that result in bodily injury (BI), property damage (PD), or personal and advertising injury (PI). General Liability is designed to cover an insured’s liability arising out of incidents on the insured’s premises or from the nonprofessional aspects of the insured’s practice, which include premises, operations, products & completed operations and advertising & personal injury.

General Liability Coverages

There are three basic coverage areas that comprise a General Liability policy:

  1. bodily injury and property damage (BI/PD)
  2. personal and advertising injury
  3. medical payments coverage

Personal & Advertising Liability

Personal and advertising injury liability protects an insured against claims arising out of certain offenses, such as libel, slander, false arrest, malicious prosecution, use of another’s advertising idea, wrongful eviction, entry, or invasion of privacy.

Medical Payments

The Medical Payments section of the General Liability policy includes payments for third-party injuries or accidents on the insured’s premises (place of business). Medical payments by an insurer can be triggered without legal action from a third party. This provides for prompt settlement of smaller medical claims without litigation, which can save both the carrier and insured money.

BOP & Package Policies

General Liability can be purchased as a stand-alone policy or it can be bundled with Property insurance to form a Package Policy or Business Owners Policy (BOP). The Property portion of a package policy can include coverage for a building or business contents (i.e. computers, furniture, etc..) or both. Learn more about Property Insurance.

Another coverage that can be added to a Package Policy is Hired/Non-Owned Auto. This coverage is to provide limited auto coverage to a firm that does not have any vehicles insured under the business name. It provides excess coverage over vehicles owned or rented (hired) by employees and used for company business. Learn more about Commercial Auto Insurance.
