Drawings – Contract Tip of the Week

Jan 12, 2017Risk Solutions

Q: I’ve been told to distinguish between “record drawings” and “as-builts.” Can you explain how you perceive the difference?

A:

A: “As-builts” are typically prepared by a contractor who marks up plans in accordance with changes or clarifications that are made during construction. Design professionals typically furnish “record drawings,” which are based upon information furnished by the contractor. Design professionals provide “record drawings” because they may not have all of the information to truly represent “as-built” conditions.

The Risk Specialty Group and RLI Design Professionals are pleased to feature our Contract Tip of the Week series. Each week, we’ll review a question submitted by a design firm relating to the subject of contracts. Keep in mind, though, that these discussions are general in nature and in making specific business decisions, it’s important to review your options with a knowledgeable attorney.
